MaximizingTherapeutic Effectiveness using the Stages of Change Model and Motivational Interviewing
Workshop Description:
This workshop is designed to help participants maximize their therapeutic effectiveness by identifying a client's stage of change, selecting stage appropriate treatment goals, and utilizing motivational interviewing techniques in the therapeutic relationship.
Therapy is more effective when the therapist accurately assesses the client's motivational state and applies appropriate therapeutic interventions to that stage of change.
For lasting change to occur, clients typically pass through the five stages of change before the new behavior issufficiently established. These stages are: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. As in any change process, a lapse into old behaviors can occur. Therefore, relapse is also considered as a stage inthis model.
Resistance is also a part of the change process. By using motivational interviewing techniques, the therapist is able to create a therapeutic relationship that enables the client to work through resistance. By matching therapeutic goals and interventions to the client's stage of change, resistance to change is lower and therapeutic interventionsare more effective.
